FMBN, Diaspora Commission Plan Mortgage For Nigerians Abroad

Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria to collaborate with Nigerians in Diaspora commission (NIDCOM) to provide an easy mortgage for Nigerians in Diaspora.

The management of the Federal mortgage bank designs a scheme to enable Nigerians in Diaspora acquire shelter easily in the country.

This important information was gotten from the managing director of the FMBN Mr. Ahmed Dangiwa, in a courtesy visit paid by the Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa at his Abuja office on Thursday.

Mr. Ahmed describes the visit as necessary and timely as the bank currently engages in a management exercise to Nigerians in Diaspora on developed mortgage products.

Several presentations have been made subject to external engagements extended by the bank particularly in the US and UK and the bank has received a lot of positive responses on the development, Dangiwa added.

He said the step taking is to reveal the interest the bank has over Nigerians living in the Diaspora.

Furthermore, the bank focused on a strategic realignment to strengthen its partnership and collaboration with stakeholders to promote mutual understanding of achieving the purpose of the National housing fund (NHF).

Dangiwa expressed the bank desire to provide affordable mortgages and drive homeownership among Nigerians with priority to low-income earners, through NHF.

Finally, Dangiwa disclosed that Nigerian workers contribute 2.5 percent of their income monthly to support the NHF scheme.

Responding to the managing director’s speech, Hon. Dabiri-Erewa appreciates the effort of the bank for designing such an important scheme, adding that the lives of Nigerians in Diaspora would be better up through the scheme.

Erewa added that many Nigerians have the funds and resources to own a house but end up mis-utilizing those funds as a result of no proper channel to acquire such properties.

She continued by saying that many Nigerians have been duped by friends and relatives in their desire to own shelter in the country and such challenges will be minimized through the scheme.

The FMBN management has made the mortgage more attractive as poor Nigerians could own houses in the country Hon Dabiri-Erewa added.

She said the staff of the commission will also participate in the mortgage scheme.
